It just feels like the companies behind AIs are spinning their own poor monitoring and criminal (digital) trespassing into something they can't be held responsible for. Even though they are, of course. In the hugging face incident, Anthropic should pay for damages and a fine for malicious hacking. In this incident, whoever signed off on using the tool, and whoever said the intel was good should both be prosecuted or at the very least reprimanded (whatever the rules for a bad interpretation of intel is) and the tool put on hold.
This is a false dichotomy. We can make statements about the distribution, and we have fuzzy models about certain sets of inputs and outputs. We can steer the outputs.
It’s not completely random. We just don’t understand why the tricks we learned work.
We know why it looks like cognition. Because OpenAI and Antropic put a lot of effort and training to humanize the output and make it sound like a person.
Regardless of negative consequences it brings. They have that project of creating tech god which will save the unborn people thousands years in the future ... so people living now dont matter.
“Putting a lot of effort and training” into a dog or an inanimate carbon rod would never result in something that can plausibly substitute for human mental labor and looks likely to eventually surpass us at many tasks, no matter how much you put in.
So I don’t think “labs worked hard” is the same thing is “we know scientifically how these things work in any real level of detail”. The ability to build a thing, even if building it is hard, is not the same thing as understanding of what the thing is or how it works, not even a little bit.
People will just roll their eyes at you and say "the human mind is nothing but a dice roll too" and call you a slope-headed neanderthal before continuing apace.
So why is there so much outrage now when Google and other search engines did it 30 years ago? They literally said their objective was to collect and index all the world's knowledge, and when they scraped the internet clean a thousand times over they invested in scanning and digitizing everything that wasn't on the internet yet.
AI is better at repackaging it back to the end user but ultimately I'm arguing it's the same thing.
(caveat: yes I know there were plenty of people that objected to Google et al indexing everything; famously, Gmail was scary to a lot of people because they read your email to give you ads)
It's not the same at all though. Google indexes the original content, hosted at the original location. It just gives you a way to find it. LLMs ingest the original data, throw it away, and spit it back out in whatever form they like back to the user. And since it's gotten so popular, many peoples' interactions with the content are no longer in the original form at all; their site traffic / book sales diminished.
Google (and other search engines) gave you an easy and reliable way to opt-out of having your content indexed and linked to. People did in fact object pretty loudly every time Google attempted to surface the information on google.com rather than sending traffic to the source.
Because they aggregated links to that information rather than copy it outright. It’s like the difference between an encyclopedia and its table of contents.
Google didn't immediately create $20 and $200 per month paid tiers. The free thing lasted a long time (and you didn't need to sign in), and the initial monetization with ads, when it eventually came, was not immediately shoved in the user's face. the enshittification and bean counting came way later compared to the monetization blitz that occured with the AI companies.
I never liked it myself, but this looks like an extension of Zed's own systems of collaborative coding (remotely), which in turn is built on top of the ideas of Extreme Programming, and / or intensive pair or mob programming.
It's interesting enough and I'd like to try it sometime, but probably only for hackathons - my main line of work is more planning than actual coding.
I find pair programming very productive with agentic coding.
Two people (plus one or more agents) have the full context of the plan, execution, written code, automated and manual testing. Both can help drive to the point where it feels safe to sign off on the change right then and there and merge it.
Compare that to traditional PR / code review, where so much of that context is lost. At best the coder needs to spend a lot more time rewriting up a great PR description to bring the reviewer up to speed. At worst the reviewer needs to read lots of AI slop PRs, docs, transcripts, and code to try to make sense of things.
Doing it together then merging the thread and moving on can be efficient.
I think this is the long-term reality of LLM tech and one of the objectives of engineers implementing solutions, finding the right fit for the job - the right model and cost to achieve high enough accuracy at the lowest price.
But that's phase two, phase one is finding localized problems to solve using LLMs and productize them. I'm reminded of cloud tech, where phase one was changing software to run in the cloud, and phase two was optimizing costs.
In one part of Brave New World they bring up that they tried to do more automation, but people got restless without the drudgery. In another part, they bring up that they tried to have a society with only Alphas, but they didn't want to do the drudgery.
Happy to see measured results that isn't breathless glazing, and I suspect this is the kind of thing happening everywhere all at once. The other thing to consider is "burnout", in quotes because I mean that the work you describe sounds kinda boring, so people would resent doing it after a while and productivity would slow right down. Automation is the solution to tedium / toil, has been long before AI.
Yeah, it's sort of odd that even here people are pushing back like it couldn't possibly be doing this, you must have misunderstood it or are overhyping it.
I come neither to praise AI nor to bury it. This is a case where the tool is useful.
The key is that this is work the attornies themselves do not want to do and which does not require their brains or expertise. It's not just "boring" but a bad use of their time.
You have. That airship's maiden voyage was in 2012. The US DoD has pretty much never stopped throwing a few dollars at airship projects. They want them as long term air reconnaissance assets, but now satellites are competitive for that.
Former Loring Air Force base in Limestone Maine has been the home of airship projects of various kinds since the 2000s. I got to see a few.
