Not enough job supply for all of the law school graduates and this guy is surprised that they dont allow foreign competition to immigrate. Sorry to break it, we dont need more lawyers at the moment. Maybe try again in 10 years?
Difference of philosophy. Every one wants to come here. NPR did a bit about this this morning, and claimed one study found that 500 - 700 million people would like to move to the US if they had the chance. We cant just let anyone live here, have to be selective. The guy argues that talent should be a factor that decides who gets in. But what if you have the wrong talent? What if you are trying to work in a collapsed field like Law?
Do what you love, not what you think is going to get you the big salary.
If you love languages or art, there are certainly ways to support yourself and do them.
I think it's pretty outrageous to say anyone not studying STEM is wasting their time.
Sure, STEM enables our modern infrastructure, but the arts provide the things that just make life better -- movies, stories, music, etc... World would be pretty boring without.
the vast majority of people studying humanities degrees do not LOVE the subject. they just choose a certain path after high school that seems interesting. the production of culture has very little to do with what people study at university...
Izztmzzt, I'll admit, we do love Rails :). Naturally, a good percentage of our initial content turned out to be Rails centered, but the large majority of our content library is not.
We're looking to expand into all of the areas that our users are interested in, which topics would you most like to see?
Im always impressed by folks who can keep on the road like this.
I myself prefer to stay in an area long term and marinate the local culture and language. I studied abroad in Beijing for one year in undergrad, and taught english in Japan for 2 year. You discover many subtle things by staying somewhere for an extended period of time, and learn a new way of living. Definitely want to do it again.
But before I die, I'd like to try this method too.
