One of my early mentors worked on it. They mentioned the pulsation for the sleep indicator was modeled not just on the human respiratory rate, but specifically that of a sleeping adult. It came up when we were playing around with on/off dimming curves for a room based video conferencing product and discussing physical analogies we could model a curve on. Fun afternoon exploration, but in the end we just stuck with ease-in/out. I miss when you didn’t need to overly justify taking an afternoon detour to explore whether something could be improved.
pretty sure it's an established rule now that drywall cannot be discussed w/o linking to vancouver carpenter.
but, yeah, his videos are great. i've done more than my share of everything from sound abatement channels/glues/etc, hanging rock on vaulted ceilings, to level 5 finishes, but I still like to flip though his videos every now and then and pick up logistical / speed tips.
re: finding studs. unless it's balloon framing, you'll hit the bottom plate in normal stick home construction (and if not, you probably should air seal that gap...). The most consistent and easiest way to find studs is hovering a neodymium magnet across the wall to find the drywall screws. I haven't used my stud finder in years b/c of how much more reliable this is. Plus, it works even if you've doubled up your drywall (e.g. 2x 5/8in w/ green glue for sound abatement, etc).
IIRC BMW used to have a form of this in their cars about 25-30 years back so that the hvac would be able to blow heat before the engine coolant was up to temp after sitting overnight.
> the social media of today don't seem all that much different from the internet forums of back in the day
I’m not trying to be a jerk, but did you actually participate in “Internet forums back in the day?” I couldn’t think of anything more different than contemporary social media. Internet forums in late 90’s and early 00’s were something special. Hell, I had more “internet friends” from online forums attend my wedding than I did friends from high school or college… and for some it was the first time meeting in person.
Did they describe them as either wholesome or safe?
To me the difference is in the doom-scrolling, the shoving rage-bait in your face and the gaming for addictiveness.
Old-school forums, whether they were wholesome or not, didn't do that stuff. Hell, I used to be on Kuro5hin, which was incredibly toxic, but I have IRL friends from there and it just wasn't the same as doom-scrolling through algorithmically selected influencers while meta/tiktok shoved ads in my face.
4chan is old enough to drink. Something Awful is from the 20th century. Don't pretend that transgressive internet content is some novel challenge that today's youth must face for the first time.
You are mistaken if you think it is about transgression. Old forums had no algo feeds to manipulate the content you saw and steer you. This is the issue, not so much the content itself.
No our algorithmic manipulation was done through corporate media. Same monsters, different medium. It was the church, then newspapers, cable news, and now social media. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manufacturing_Consent
That’s pretty cool. I’d assumed there would be something similar to the run-away truck ramps you see on steep grades — basically a deep gravel pit. However, actually thinking about it, something along the lines of a gravel pit would likely cause significant damage to engines (not to mention risks created by engine damage) but also seriously impede emergency services.
These overrun areas aren't that long. This trick is used where there's not enough room for a long overrun area.
The high drag has to start fast.
With the styrofoam/pumice material, the wheels quickly drop all the way to the hard bottom of the arresting material, and then plow forward, dissipating energy by crushing pumice. With something more solid, the wheels may skim the surface for a while before digging in.
Gravel will happily fuck up a prop just as much as a turbine; it's more about ground clearance. The engines on modern airliners are quite low to the ground, which is why they tend to ingest gravel kicked up by the nose gear.
>What's the ground clearance of a flying piece of gravel! (in a gust of wind for example)
I'm not sure I understand the question you're asking. "Ground clearance" refers to the space between the thing and the ground. Airliners are low-wing monoplanes with the engines slung underneath the wings, and aft of the nose landing gear. The tires at the nose can kick up gravel which not only dings up the underside of the fuselage but can also get sucked into the jet intakes. There's only about 2 feet of clearance between the engine cowling and the ground.
Compare this to a C-130 Hercules which is a high-wing monoplane with turboprops, which is designed to handle some degree of unprepared surfaces. The prop tips are never less than about 5 feet from the ground.
Or, compare to a Piper Cub which has much less prop ground clearance but has the prop mounted forward of the nose landing gear so it's much less likely to encounter gravel.
"What is the ground clearance of a flying piece of gravel" is... not really a question that makes sense to me.
A small price to pay, surely, to be rescued from the mind flaying less fortunate people in corporate hellholes must face daily.
Even with ublock Origin, these corporations will build a profile on me. Not so in Iran, where people can live without the watchful eye of Google looking at everything they do.
> less fortunate people in corporate hellholes must face daily
I'm sorry but how tone-deaf can someone be? Over 12.000 people have been killed in the protests with some reports going up to 30.000 since then and here you are happy about the fact that Google cannot profile them anymore. Protesters are beeing shot on-masse in the streets and families from outside the country have no ideas if their brothers and sisters are even still alive. Have some decency.
I have a disdain for what online advertising has become and the data industrial complex that it empowers. Tbh, I think advertising should be regulated like porn and prohibited for those under age of 18.
With that said, what in the actual fuck makes you say this when ten(s) of thousands are being murdered in conjunction with this ad-free period you’re speaking so wistfully about?
We should perhaps take heart that even if these terrible things are being done, some good is being done too. Privacy is a fundamental human right, and just as important as the others. We should not encourage the view that privacy is a luxury item, only for those who aren’t being jailed. It is as much a human right as the right to freedom of expression.
Some places you have the former and not the latter. Other places you have the latter and not the former. But human rights are important! Every one of them!
