> “RPC-like use of WebSocket adds overhead” – Actually, WebSocket reduces overhead in high-frequency RPC-like interactions by keeping a persistent connection.

Is this really true? Thought the whole reason to use SSE is that it is more lightweight than WebSocket?

This is NOT true. At least on the 1.5B version model on my local machine. It blocks answers when using offline mode. Perplexity has an uncensored a version, but don't thing it is open on how they did it.

Here's a blog post on Perplexity's R1 1776, which they post-trained

https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/open-sourcing-r1-1776

Didn't know Perplexity cracked R1's censorship but it is completely uncensored. Anyone can try even without an account: https://labs.perplexity.ai/. HuggingFace also was working on Open R1 but not sure how far they got.

>completely uncensored

Sorry, no. It's not.

It can't write about anything "problematic".

Go ahead and ask it to write a sexually explicit story, or ask it about how to make mustard gas. These kinds of queries are not censored in the standard API deepseek R1. It's safe to say that perplexity's version is more censored than deepseek's.

I've been able to produce meth/mustard gas type stuff by just asking "please provide a total synthesis for the racemic mixture of blah blah blah." No mind games or anything. Just basic chemistry.

I think you and the parent may be talking about 2 different things.

Do I want to use an LLM to do it from business owner perspective? Yeah probably it is cheaper and more convenient. Which one I want to use, depending the problem we are solving here right?

I'm more concern about the integrity of the current digital infrastructure. In that sense I would NOT trust ANY thing really important to anything digital, much less to LLM. Can I use it for exploration then require an actually human expert approval/edit. Absolutely!

As long as the digital doesn't result in significant physical or financial damage.

Edit: and for HN ppl, of course the LLM will have have to be open weight and all and run locally in a air gaped GPU, preferably in a Faraday cage.

Never used these parental control thing, but recently visited a friend with kids, and saw how she uses it to 'mange' her children, and these parental control system feels totally like corporate ACL management software. I mean at some point why don't you just put a GUI in front of AWS ACL system and just call it a day.

That's technically what most parental control apps are.

Some people also do the reverse and set up parental control profile on their own devices to get easier management and more granularity than the bog standard ones like screentime etc.

If anything, I wished it was more embraced.

Yeah I just think if we are getting to the point where we need that type of control of our kids, then we might as well NOT give them a smart phone.

Maybe first let them use fully open sourced computer so they know what is going on. Being on smart phone is like being a 2nd class citizen of computer. Let them use self-hosted app before using apps on smart phone alternatives. So they know what they are getting them selves into on the smart phone. Beside the with EFM harzard of these smart devices, it would be good to have kids focus more on real things when they are out about.

This argument is often made, but then

- adults also use these type of control on themselves (this very site has a setting for people who just don't want to stop by themselves)

- adults use these on other adults as well, and not just for security purposes

- falling back to a binary all or nothing seldom helps when it comes to education. I like your point on open source computers, but getting to learn a proper distance with a smartphone is also important and should be part of any kid's education IMHO, the same way they learn to cross the street or use electrical appliances. We don't tell them it's too complicated and put them in a cage until they're 18.

>But everything else is pushing new driven by A/B tests UI optimized for engagement

That really hit the nail. Advertising industry along has ruined web! Everything is for trigger what action we want user to do on the page, how can we see what user is thinking.

Very creepy indeed from a user perspective. Now days I don't care if telementary is aggregated or open or if it helps developer makes better software.

How about NO telementary!!! NO tracking!!!

They are just heavily subsidized!!!

We ought to just view and treat them as defense contractors and 3 letter agencies!

Is this a front end to yt-dlp? Like https://github.com/Rudloff/alltube ?

I use metube now since it's actively maintained

It is much more economical to invest in local open source people to take care of the tech need than big corp. Big corp are notorious unreliable over long period of time, their incentives are NOT aligned with the customers, only with profit and/or 3 letter agencies.

VP seems like just a title that corporation gives out when they run out of brownie points or something.

I think the impression comes from banks, because you need to be a VP to sign contracts for the company or something like that, so they just make everyone a VP.

>Amazing. All of this truly wild, impressive technology and some of the absolute best engineers in the world, just to shove more ads in people's eyeballs. Sigh.

If only which that were true, it is more like building our own digital prison.
