While the article blames the quest for thinness in the current generation of MacBook Pros, I have a 17" MBP from 2006 that also has this "stage light" issue. And this is a machine with a full optical drive and removable battery.

At least now I know the cause. Too bad my hands are really too big to fix it on my own.
