This is mainly a US cultural phenomenon through the Protestant Work Ethic. Europe had more Catholicism but the immigrants to America were puritans. Anyhow the idea is that by working hard you are good.

It's not something new it's in the very fabric of American society and culture. Work is good, lots of work is better.
