I've always thought that having a person take over from a computer when driving is a fundamentally flawed premise. People, by nature, are not going to devote enough attention to a task they're not actively involved in and they won't be able to take action fast enough to avoid an incident because of the time it takes to context switch from whatever they were doing to handling the situation that just came up.
