About Security Keys for Apple ID
You can use the PIV functionality of a yubikey to act as a smartcard, and you can log in and sudo authenticate with the yubikey and a PIN.

One advantage is that a PIV PIN can be much shorter than a password and still be secure (because the smart card/Yubikey enforces attempt limiting in secure hardware).
