Depending on the country you live earth overshoot day is pretty soon. 128GB of RAM and other specs for a workstation certainly sound like overshoot. I'd wish smart people would use their brains and saving resources instead of wasting them.
Until you're living in a tree and sending this message with a carrier pigeon there's some criticisms anyone could level at you also. And, what if our future energy saviour just so happened to need 128GB of RAM to prove their model in time?
I am typing this on a mobile phone. Maybe 7-8 years old. 2 GB of RAM. Sailfish OS, still maintained (not perfectly, but better than the competition). Made as a low cost smart phone for India originally. Works decently well on many Web sites, close to perfectly on HN.
So a small computer. Full of environmentally problematic stuff. Just small and old. If that's your 'save the planet' plan, keep your condescension to yourself.
You can accumulate/partition statistical numbers in different granularity. Here it's done by countries. You could also do it by men or women or whatever partitioning you want. And of course you can choose to not partition at all and report only one global number.
Calling it still earth overshoot day after partitioning might be not fully correct.
If the 128GB grants a greater level of efficiency and allows more tasks to be completed in less time and thus saving energy, then how is this overshoot?
Might it be that you're just failing to measure reality objectively?
In 2019 I thought that by now I could buy a bunch of 8GB Raspberry Pi 4s (or equivalent) for $20 apiece, install them all over the house and car for various purposes, and occasionally use them as a cluster for video editing or whatever.
The pandemic and trade wars put a wrench in the gears of that plan, but I still think that would be way cooler than lugging around a 128GB laptop and using it for everything, a.k.a. single point of failure.
